Which classic automobiles make sound investment?

I have just retired, with a bit of spare cash available and as returns on invested money are so poor at the moment, I was wondering if an investment in a vintage or classic automobile would be a wise alternative. And if so what make/model would you suggest?

Regards, PD.

How can I import a commercial SUV?

Hi guys,

Really hoping that you can help me with this one. I'm hoping to import an SUV (either Volkswagen Touareg or Mercedes-Benz ML 280) from the UK and register it as a commercial vehicle. The most ideal situation would be to import it, get the crewcab conversion and register it as a five-seater crewcab (I'm one of the few who would very genuinely need both five seats for crew and the ability to drop them and use as a commercial through my job in events), but will settle for two seats and commercial tax.

There do not seem to be any of those SUVs in the UK that are non-passenger versions (I presume due to the UK not having a commercial SUV as such) so I'm just wondering what steps I will need to take to get the lower tax rate and import as commercial.

Please let me know, as your help will be much appreciated.

What's the point of stop-start?

Whats the point of stop-start when your Volkswagen/Audi diesel is doing probably 60mpg? Is this just making a problem that isn't there or just another cost to the consumer?

How best to check insurance prices for a automobile?

I am thinking of buying a second hand automobile and have started to browse online. Apart from the specs of automobile and the price, a big determining factor to buy the automobile or not will be the price of the insurance premium. However, if I want to know the premium I have to go through the rather painful process of filling in online quotation forms. Painful and time consuming. Is there a faster way to check the insurance premium online for any given automobile I am interested in?

Thanks

Would diesel, hybrid or PHEV suit my needs?

Diesel, hybrid or PHEV? I do a 200km round trip commute most days. A mix of 140km motorway and 60km small rural roads and stop-start city traffic. Other days I could do 300/400km of which 25 per cent would be city type traffic. Is diesel still my better option? For a PHEV I could plug in at home or at my destination most times.

Should I repair my Mondeo before trading in?

I have a 2008 Mondeo 1.8 TDCi with 230,000 kilometres on the clock that I was planning on trading in against a new automobile. There are a couple of nasty scrapes on two of the wheel arches that I've been quoted €977 to repair and the rear axle bushes need replacing, which will cost another €350. Other than that the automobile is mechanically sound with all servicing and wear and tear maintenance up to date. The automobile has a full service history through a main Ford dealer and I've owned it since new. Given that at best, I'd expect to trade it in for €3k or scrappage, is it worth my while getting the work before trading in, or would I be better off taking the hit as part of a trade in?
