I am a 24-year-old man looking for my first automobile. I am looking for something of medium size, medium to small engine and a solid automobile. I was just wondering is it a good idea to go to automobile auctions or are they a bit of a gamble. Or what could you recommend with a budget of a maximum of €4k?

Where can I find out how much my 2002 Peugeot 307 SW Estate is worth? Thinking of trading it in for a new automobile, if possible a Renault.

Could you tell which were the first diesel automobiles on the Irish market to be fitted with diesel particulate filters (DPF) as standard or even as an option? We're looking for a 6-8 year-old automobile and would like to consider a diesel for cheaper running costs, but a DPF is a must because of our concerns over how diesel soot particulates can cause asthma. Preferably at least medium sized or mini-MPV.

I may decide to import a automobile from Britain; as I would plan to keep it for a long time I would like to change the speedo and odometer to km/h. How would this affect the VRT inspection and the NCT? How can I record it that it was changed?
I do not want a scenario that it pops up on a automobile checking website as suspicious, but would like it to show that the speedo and odometer where changed at a specific mileage.

Thanks for the last answer.
Could I take the heating pipes going through the bulkhead off and join them back to back with a bit of copper pipe? Wouldn't this bypass the radiator in the automobile and to hell with the heater as I think the dashboard has to come out to fit a new heater radiator. Or am I only looking for trouble?

I'm in serious need of advice! I'm hoping to buy my own automobile (have full driver's licence and have insurance on home automobile). My first major dilemma is whether to get petrol or diesel.
I'm living in Dublin and will be commuting to work roughly about 30 mins away with M50. I would be travelling back to "home home" (about every second/third weekend) and that journey would be roughly six hours in total.
My second dilemma is what automobile to get. I want a good automobile but also for it to be reasonably small. I'm thinking Volkswagen Polo/SEAT Ibiza/Opel Corsa/Fiat Grande Punto - quite broad I know. My budget would be around €8,000 or €9,000.
