Comfortable, spacious and diesel for €8,000?

I want to buy a diesel automobile. I need space and comfort. My budget is up to €8,000. What automobiles would you recommend?

Thanks

Answer

Hi Neil,

We'd love to help, but we need a little more information first. Do you want a saloon, hatchback or SUV? How old are you prepared to go and what kind of driving do you do? You can answer by adding a comment below. I have several automobiles in mind but let us have more detail and we can really help you out then.

Hi Neil,

Because you do quite a lot of miles per year you will need something that is quite low mileage and you certainly need a diesel to save on fuel economy. An SUV should be possible within your budget.

One drawback with an SUV that is a few years old is that road tax could be quite expensive. Most were powered by 2.0-litre (and bigger) diesels and that means expensive road tax under the old system.

At the higher end of the mileage, but within your budget and a pretty useful SUV is the Nissan X-Trail.

We found one on the classifieds that costs €7,950, comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine and would be pretty well equipped:

The only thing I would worry about is that within one year the mileage you are doing could really start to show on it and then your investment of €8,000 could be worth an awful lot less.

You could go for something like a Suzuki Grand Vitara. We found a 2002 model and though it is more 'agricultural' than the likes of the X-Trail, this one has only got 46,000 miles on the clock so could cope with a few years of your high mileage:

If you did want a Toyota RAV4 you could go for a petrol version as this would be within your budget. While we know that this would cost you more in fuel, you could get a nice 2004 version with low mileage like the example we found for €6,750.

You would pay less road tax than you would for an equivalent diesel model (1.8-litre vs. 2.0-litre) and this one has done only 68,000 miles so could be good for a lot more:

Hi Paddy,

Thanks for getting back to me. I would be doing over 25,000 miles a year. Style of the automobile wouldn't matter all that much. I had been thinking of something like the Toyota RAV4 or the Hyundai Santa Fe. I need space but dont want a van as I want to use it for social and personal use. Reliability and reasonable road tax would also be key for me.

I was thinking of 2003 or newer, but maybe my budget might dictate otherwise.

Thanks for your help.

Neil
