Am I liable for motor tax arrears?

Thinking of buying a second hand automobile, but the tax is six months out of date. Am I liable to pay these arrears or do I tax it from the time I buy it?

Answer

Hi David,

No, but the previous owner will be liable and will have to pay the back tax and a penalty.
