The moment Ireland's best-selling automobile got its name.

changagoidem Features | The moment Ireland's best-selling automobile got its name.

End of year figures for 2012 released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that, for the eleventh time in its fourteen-year production run, the Ford Focus was the best-selling automobile in Ireland racking up an impressive 3,738 sales - more than either Audi or BMW managed across their entire ranges.

While data is still being collated it seems likely the Focus will also take the best-selling automobile in the world with figures released in September showing 737,856 examples had been sold to that point. The Focus has been an undoubted success for Ford, so much…

Baptism of motorsport fire: rallycross

Two laps into my first ever competitive motorsport outing I've come to a stop on the grass just inches from the Armco barrier. I'm not sure if the automobile is still drivable, but I do know that my door is in a bad way and something's rubbing on the right rear tyre. Yet all I can think about is how I'm going to get the automobile back to the pits so it can be put right for the rest of the day's racing.

Welcome to the world of Irish rallycross. This is not for the fainthearted, but boy is…

According to the Mayan Long Count Calendar (a gift to the Mayan people from the local Chinese takeaway we believe) the world will cease to be today, on December 21 2012. While it is nice to know when you and the rest of the world’s population will come to an end, the calendar has not given any information as to how the world will finish.

Recent research from Doctor Professor Professor Doctor Iva Madethisup and Professor Doctor Doctor Professor Iku Ofenant of the University of Titicaca’s Centre for Research and Partying (CRAP) reveal that the end of days will not…

At long last my winter hack is sitting on my drive. Regular readers will know already that it is a 1999 Land Rover Discovery 2.5 Tdi and in its original Alpine White paintwork. In fact it was last used on the roads in 2009 and since then has been left standing in the open.

First thing to try was a jump start thanks to a Citroen Berlingo diesel van, but even after leaving it a while the best I could get was the dash lights working. The lights and horn functioned fine; it just would not turn the engine…

I have to report that my little blue Fiat Cinquecento is running faultlessly so far. Indeed, so is the Renault Clio. Both these automobiles have a less than favourable reputation for longevity and reliability yet buy wisely, look after them and all being well you will avoid sudden problems like failing gearboxes.

I have checked the oil levels and tyre pressures of both the Clio and the Cinquecento and all is well. I keep an eye on the oil and water levels of both these automobiles for different reasons. The Cinquecento has a reputation for blowing head gaskets and…

Winter is upon us and the time has come where it is a pointless task cleaning the automobile. Road grime instantly reattaches itself. While we are on the subject of road grime, the flat blade wipers I have fitted to the Fiat have not performed so well. I have tried several times to get a clear and even sweep of the blades but failed. I tried bending the arms as well as the blades but all to no avail. They are not totally useless, but the best I can get with them is a slight skipping of the blade on…
