The rise in popularity of crossovers and mid-sized SUVs has led to a proliferation of new models in the market. Many of these are derived from normal automobiles, but go beyond simply having raised height on their side. Most also offer useful all-wheel-drive options, and while you may not plan on venturing off-road it does help in wet and icy conditions. This is our guide to the best models currently on sale in these two segments.
1 - SEAT Ateca
The SEAT Ateca is close to being the perfect SUV. It's big enough to have presence, but small enough to allow it to fit into every parking space while still comfortably seating five. The front-wheel drive system is sufficient for most, but you can have all-wheel drive if you so desire.
2 - Peugeot 3008
Stunning design inside and out will win over many buyers to the new Peugeot 3008, which banishes from memory its awkward looking predecessor. There's more to the new automobile than good looks, however, as it's of high quality, is spacious inside and comes with the promise of low running costs. Shame there's no four-wheel-drive option, though.
3 - Mercedes-Benz GLC
The Mercedes-Benz GLC currently rules the premium compact SUV roost thanks to its smart looks, roomy interior that is exquisitely finished and good drivetrains. It's a terrific all-rounder proving very comfortable on longer journeys, while city driving is made even easier by an excellent nine-speed automatic transmission.
4 - Volkswagen Tiguan
Much like the Golf, the new Volkswagen Tiguan has real mass appeal. This second generation automobile is a big step forward from its predecessor, offering much better driving characteristics, style and functionality. The usual specification grades are available, but be warned: it can get expensive depending on which options you choose.
5 - Toyota C-HR
This cool-looking SUV is Toyota proving that it can do cool. Toyota hopes the C-HR will rival the likes of the Hyundai Tucson and Nissan Qashqai. Its coupe-like styling is great outside, but rear passengers will find it dark. Only petrol or hybrids are on offer, too - no diesel.
